It is not always easy to find inspiring and original environmentalists online. But when you found them, you have access to a lot of amazing news, information, pictures, documentaries, and more.
In this post, I will show you different figures and organisations worth discovering on the social media. As most of the media often offer the same types of options, I will show you which account I look for, on which social media and why.
YouTube
YouTube is a platform that offers you different types of videos, speeches, TV shows, and full-length documentaries about various different topics. This is the social media I use the most for my researches because of the variety of the topics available, and the quality of certain channels and videos.
TEDxTalks
TEDxTalks is by far my favourite source on YouTube. TED is a non-profit organisation, which invites people to talk about topics such as education, creativity, technology, business, science, ecology, etc.
Those speakers are scientists, researchers, self-taught people, teachers, war survivors, motivational speakers, anthropologists, surfers, and more! They just have to be experts in the topic they choose to talk about by their work or by the experiences they have lived.
TED has more than 11 million followers on YouTube and more than 3.8 million on Instagram.
Why do I love those videos?
1. The diversity of the different topics is incredibly vast.
2. The number of videos never ends: more than 100K videos uploaded!
3. You can discover and learn about SO many different topics, that you won't hear about in the Media.
4. The videos last for 18 minutes more or less, so it's not too long to watch.
5. The speakers are experts in their field.
6. Videos are uploaded regularly and are dealing with the latest issues of nowadays.
Here are a few interesting speeches from TED's environmentalists speakers:
Greg Asner, Kim Preshoff, Lauren Singer, James Borrell, Suzanne Simard, David Puttnam, Emma Bryce, Alexis McGivern.
Here are a few other YouTubers and Channels dealing with the topic of the environment:
- DirtyBiology (French channel)
- BBC
- Arte (Franco-German channel)
Instagram is my second favourite social media for researches. Here as well, you can find nice images, videos, and small texts. It is quite easy to use and very quick to find information. Interactions between accounts on Instagram are a big thing and you can communicate with the people or organisations you follow very easily.
I mainly use this social media when I am looking for good quality pictures or short but impressive videos.
Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation
The American Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most engaged environmentalists. He founded in 1998 the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which already spent $100 million in the cause, helps organisations in 50 different countries around the world and founded more than 200 projects. You can find more information about his foundation on my previous post about Leonardo DiCaprio.
On his Instagram accounts, he shares lots of important information and news related to the topic. He also shares his ideas and successful missions other environmentalists do around the world.
Here are a few other beautiful and inspiring accounts that you MUST have a look at:
- Oceana
- WWF
Facebook is a social media that I use much less than YouTube and Instagram for my researches. Indeed, I find it less easy to find as much information as in other social media. I would say that Facebook is more used to communicate than to research, even though you can still find interesting profiles, organisations, videos and studies sometimes.
Here are two amazing organisations that I want you to know about:
The 4Ocean Organisation
4Ocean is an organisation that is removing trash from the oceans and coastlines. They also try to inspire people to work together in order to clean our oceans. 4Ocean sells bracelets made of recycled plastic and glass bottles to fund its ocean clean-up operation.
The Surfrider Foundation
The Surfrider Foundation USA is a non-profit organisation that works to protect and preserve the world's oceans just as 4Ocean. They also organize beach cleaning sessions.
Wanna participate in their cleaning sessions? Here is the link to their website.
Twitter is the social media that I use the less for my researches. Although, I do sometimes when I am looking for the latest news about a precise topic, as the information travels extremely fast with tweets.
NASA
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is a United States government agency that makes researches about science and technology related to air and space. They also record environmental and spatial statistics and data over the years. You can have a look in my post about Digital Pollution to see how I use NASA’s work.
Get more information about NASA in my previous post about my main sources for the blog.
Few other twitter accounts dealing with the topic of the environment:
- Albert Arnold Gore (Nobel prize, oscar-winning and former US Vice President)
- ONU
Hope you enjoyed!
